Reflection Theme: Formed by the Storm, Not Forgotten in It

From Genesis to Revelation, the imagery of water speaks to both judgment and renewal. The sea, often a symbol of chaos, finds itself stilled under the voice of Christ (Mark 4:39). And in this, we glimpse the truth: the sea doesn’t have the final word—God does.

This quote echoes from a theology of divine intention. When trials rise like waves and identity feels washed over by pressure, this reflection calls the believer to remember: God's purposes are never to destroy but to *develop*. Just as Noah’s ark floated not to sink but to safeguard; just as Jonah’s journey through the deep wasn’t punishment but propulsion—so too, our lives in Christ are not buried beneath the waves, but *built through them*.

To walk in this truth is to proclaim, like Paul in 2 Corinthians 4:8–9, that *“we are hard-pressed on every side, but not crushed… struck down, but not destroyed.”* It is to live with the belief that our suffering is not a sentence of punishment but a sanctifying—shaping us into vessels of honor (2 Timothy 2:21), fit to carry the Gospel upstream in a downstream culture.  Awaiting the glory that is to become eternal life & reward (2 Co 3:18).

In the waters, we are not forgotten. We are being fortified (Ps. 84:7; 1 Pe 5:10).

Sink &/or Swim but never give in to the adversary.   Let us learn to walk on the water and swim subsurface! (Mt 14:22-33)

Scripture Focus: Revelation 2:12–17 (BLB ESV) (The Message to Pergamum)

[12] And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges; [13] I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, [even] where Satan's seat [is]: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas [was] my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth. [14] But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication. [15] So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate. [16] Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. 📖 Reflect

Pergamum (Πέργαμος) was a city drenched in idol worship, power structures, and pressure to conform. Yet Jesus calls out a remnant who remained loyal—those who “hold fast my name” even “where Satan’s seat is.”

What does it mean to remain faithful in a culture of compromise?

How do we respond when the gospel is at odds with the norms around us?

🧠 Consider

Like the believers in Pergamum, we may find ourselves surrounded by voices that dilute truth or tolerate spiritual complacency.

The “doctrine of Balaam” and the “Nicolaitans” reveal two ancient patterns still alive today: compromise with culture and misuse of spiritual authority (Note 1).

Thought Prompt: In our ministry circles, are there teachings or tendencies that echo these dangers? What’s one area where we might need to realign with Christ’s truth?

✨ Promise

To those who overcome, Jesus offers hidden manna—a sign of spiritual sustenance and intimacy—and a white stone with a new name—identity transformed by grace.

What might it look like to walk in that identity now, even while we're still “in Pergamum”?

📖 Devotional Reflection: A Solemn Warning and a Steadfast Call

Shepherd's Goad

“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night…” — Joshua 1:8

In the quiet moments of reflection, we’re reminded that spiritual growth is not just about inspiration—it’s about vigilance. Joshua 1:8 calls us to a life of continual meditation on God’s Word, not necessarily as a ritual, but as a safeguard. It is this very devotion that protects us from subtle distortions of truth.

One such distortion is found in the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, mentioned in Revelation 2:6 and 2:15. Jesus speaks of it with rare intensity: “which thing I hate.” The Nicolaitans, whose name may derive from nikos (to conquer) and laos (people), are believed to have promoted a form of spiritual elitism and moral compromise—encouraging believers to blur the lines between grace and permissiveness.

In Pergamum, their teaching is likened to that of Balaam, who led Israel into idolatry and immorality. In Ephesus, the church is praised for rejecting their deeds. The contrast is stark: one church resists, the other tolerates. And the difference lies in their devotion to truth.

As someone named Nicholas, this passage resonates deeply with me—not only because of the name, but because of the branding and mission I carry. It’s a reminder that names carry weight, and that spiritual leadership must be anchored in clarity, not compromise.

Let this reflection serve as a gentle goad for those who want to go deeper. It’s a solemn warning, yes—but also a call to courage. To meditate. To discern. To lead with integrity.

These maps visually trace the route of the messages in Revelation 2–3 and can be a powerful visual aid for Pergamum, in particular, stands out as the site where the doctrine of the Nicolaitans was tolerated—making it especially relevant to this reflection.  Asia Minor now Turkey and Pergamum near the southern shore of the Black Sea.

Rev. 2:16 Are you walking in repentance?  I believe this "change" is something that we must acquire sustainment in.  Sustain the repentance that you received by grace!

July 1st marks a defining moment for this ever-growing project endeavor People’s Victory in Christ™. What began as "People's Victory" has grown to become PVC™, a vision anchored in hope, forged in identity, and sealed in victory has now become a trademarked movement.

People's Victory has always been more than a name—it’s a legacy of pressing forward in faith amid the cultural currents of compromise. Just as sailors chart their course by stars seen & unseen, I have navigated uncharted waters holding fast to the Word, trusting Christ as my true compass.

The "Sea Story" of PVC™ isn't just mine—it's ours. It’s the collective testimony of those who, like Antipas in Pergamum, refused to abandon their post in hostile territory. It’s the declaration that in Christ, we are not lost at sea—we are rising.

Enterprise CVN-65 Ship Building | Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5181

VFW Team Project Invitation

 “...the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” ~ FDR

 

With Memorial Day Weekend upon us here's an invitation to the building of a replica of the Yorktown Class USS Enterprise (CVN-65) decommissioned in 2012.  This ship entered the water in 1936.  Replica task originally undertaken as recreational outlet from arduous recruiting environment in 2022.  This was and remains to be a fun constructive activity to take a break from the daily routine and strains of 24/7 | 365 institutionalized posture. 🫡 

Transition from active duty to the fleet reserves caused temporary delay in the ship building project.  

Here it is!

At this stage of the build, we're ready to mount the vessel name and install the rudder, running gear and stern tube.

Before further action I hereby attempt commitment to dedicate this project to the local members of the VFW Post 5181 in Dove Creek, Colorado.

May the journey of this build be filled with new friendly bonds of fellowship and chronicles that promote honor and comradery inside & outside the halls of VFW Post 5181.

Greetings Victor's! It's time for me to bid farewell to [the personal FB] social profile. As such I intend to allow time for some migration before I delete this "professional profile" 😊. If we haven't already connected via my personal profile we still have time to do this before this profile "self-destructs" (007 theme music). Hit me up! The real Nicholas Sybrowsky. Currently the majority of us are connected, but because I truly care, all new contacts are free to connect now that I'm on terminal leave and have no obligation to treat you as an applicant. Can I confess something first?

When social media came about I was joining the Armed Forces. I didn't own a cell phone, pager or home phone. I did have a phone card in my wallet to make calls from any payphone. Public Payphones have gone the way of extinction (except Japan in 2011).

That expressed; perhaps that is why when I started a profile to assist in connecting to the world wide web as a Recruiter. I thought let me build a profile for this effort, since I was forbidden to simply make friends with potential clients via my personal profile. Needless to share any further details on my confessed stupidity. One thing I know and many of you will no doubt relate. Victory isn't plausible without failure. Most of life is trial and error.

I welcome you all to LIKE my page that I should have started with 3 years ago. It's a shame that even our instructors at the Navy Orientation Recruiting Unit didn't bother to guide us in this regard. Perhaps they're just as slow as I was 😆.

My intention is to write and share Sea Story at this page. It will also connect you to my Blog Project that FB doesn't like me to encourage you to connect at. Additionally I'll be working on some memoir, who knows maybe a book manuscript is in the making? God only knows what will come in all of this effort to promote American Posterity. Thus is my LOT, Listen, Obey and Trust in the Lord's understanding and not my own.

 Born & raised in Taylorsville City, Utah. Graduated from Taylorsville High School Class of 2000. Looking for work in News Paper Job Ad:  'Paid OJT EMT/Paramedic & Fire Fighting' Call and on the other end of the phone, the Recruiter says, "Join the Navy!" His response, "You have my Selective Service Number, goodbye"!  Later enlisting in the United States Navy following personal discussion with his Uncle Kevin, and immediate family members Dad; Steven, Mom; Cindy & Brother; Nathan.

In-Processing the Armed Forces in SLC he enlisted & shipped out to Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, IL in March of 2004 as an Undesignated Fireman Recruit.  While in boot camp he tried out for the Warrior Challenge Program earning an opportunity to become a Navy Diver.  He was classified in the rating job as a Machinist Mate.  Because Navy Diver was a position of Special Operation's expertise, back then Sailors were subject matter experts in a separate trade with diving being an extra duty.  During Basic Engineering School he met his wife Kelli while they visited the Enlisted Club, Club Nitro.  They dated long distance until 1-week before graduating Second Class Dive School in Panama City, FL.  They married at the local courthouse & renewed their vows in Hawaii with their Pastor, Reverend Clayton Ko.

Likened to that of "instant potatoes" they became an instant family!

Navy Expeditionary Combat Command—Mobile Diving Salvage Unit One Pearl Harbor.

 They resided in Honolulu, HI. Second to Hong Kong in density of population & chicken feet!  Bailey attended middle school and high school.  We coached her in Volleyball & Cheer.

Assignment 3-Naval Special Warfare Group 3-SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team-1

Returned to school for Advanced Diver Training in Panama City, FL then reported to the Dry Dock Shelter Platoon Pearl City, HI. Significant life events enhanced spiritual overhaul and trade conversion.  Carried away from the islands by the Aloha Spirit they plan to return for a family favorite restaurant Soon’s Barbeque!

Navy Diver Bottom Time Summary:  229 Dives, 8—Days, 17 Hours, 37—Minutes. AKA 209:37. Operational bottom time collected in span of 9 years.  

Selected to Force Convert to Hull Maintenance Technician.

Assignment 4:  Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center Norfolk, Virginia

But not until after Forced Conversion to a new Rating in Job & Trade Skill. Hull Maintenance Technician, also known as Seafaring Carpentry.

 New home in Virginia Beach. Kelli, Bailey, their Tabby Rabbit Pepe & Blue Heeler Moahnain ventured into east coast activities and operations at the heart of American heritage. Posterity blessing grew as Mahlee, the Red Heeler joined us, and Bailey expanded the family with Daniel Lopez. Junior, Bella, Skylar & Jynelle who later relocated to California. Nicholas launched into the Potomac School of Ministry with the Assemblies of God during this tour in Virginia, becoming a Certified Minister & Lay-Leader at sea.

Assignment 5:  USS Harry S Truman (CVN-75)

Fifth Assignment 

Proved difficult to gain, as it took four looks to get a set of orders to Advanced Welding School and the USS Harry S Truman (CVN-75) Twenty-Six years after being a student at the Truman Elementary School in West Valley City, UT.  Serving onboard in various capacities as a Sailor in the strike group.  Suez channel cruise twice & crossing the Arctic Circle.  Rounding out 6 of 7 ocean cruises nearly finalizing an Around the World Magellan Certificate.  Next stop Antarctic waters!

Summary Result of Assignment Details:

 Sea Duty Counter:  3 years, 6 months, 29 days. Family Separation Time:  1,368 or more days of the 7,371 days of full-time active-duty service. When observed as such, 20%+ of the time of separation does not seem exceptionally large, but it does not account for the distance that can emotionally occur within the home while working and the stressors upon each side of the immediate & extended family.  Live & learn, even so, 80% or less of his career has been with family close by with the few exceptions on those duty nights and days standing the watch.

Touching grounds in 30 Countries & 30 United States. He executed 13 Temporary Assigned Duties & Eight Major Taskings &/or Deployments.  Wrapping up Naval service in Utah & Colorado as a Blue Nose Shellback Naval Recruiter. 

The family now serves the community in the Rocky Mountain Ministry Network of the Assemblies of God at Dove Creek Assembly of God.
